KELMSCOTT COLLECTION
A TRIBUTE TO THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT AND ART NOUVEAU
Introducing Aux Abris’ latest collection, KELMSCOTT, a lavish tribute to heritage and timeless elegance. This collection of wallpapers draws inspiration from the opulent decor of the late 19th century, inspired by elements of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements to celebrate the intricate beauty and romanticism of the past. Some designs are influenced by the legendary William Morris and his Elizabeth Inspirations, paying homage to medieval tapestries and Arthurian legends that defined the era’s aesthetics. Aux Abris embraced the curvaceous, organic forms of Art Nouveau. But the collection’s overarching theme celebrates nature’s splendor: the beauty of tangled hedgerows, leafy trails, and lush woodlands.
Meticulously adapted from archival designs, they honor traditional craftsmanship while capturing today’s sophisticated tastes. The collection features a rich, earthy color palette, ideal for adding warmth and sophistication. Deep forest greens and rich cerulean blues dominate, creating a captivating array of tones that mirror the beauty of the natural world on faux linen, rag paper, and grasscloth grounds.
Discover the new KELMSCOTT Collection, characterized by intricate patterns, rich colors, and refined character, where the present aesthetics embrace a tribute to the past.
Personal Story
I have been immersed in designing a home on our cherished Shelter Island for the past few years. This process has been deeply personal, sometimes agonizing, allowing me to explore my passions, define my design philosophy, and refine my personal style.
Reflecting on this process, I’ve been profoundly influenced by the places I’ve lived. In my youth in Paris, I developed a deep appreciation for the ornate details of Art Nouveau, seen in everything from doorknobs to metro stops. Later, while living in England and renovating our home, I deeply admired Arts and Crafts and Edwardian architecture. Finally, moving to NY, a town built in the late 19th century, and working as a designer further fueled my passion. The historic Shingle Style houses and the romantic charm of turn-of-the-century houses—with their meandering rooms and architectural nooks—significantly shaped my design perspective.
This rich architectural heritage inspires the core of my new collection. I envision each design seamlessly fitting into the interiors of the historic houses I have admired over the years. I hope that they reflect the timeless elegance and craftsmanship of the era. – Karen Robert, Founder & Creative Director, Aux Abris
